"to the beginning" is the opening theme of "Fate/Zero" (フェイト/ゼロ Feito/Zero) which is a light novel by Gen Urobuchi, illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi, and is a prequel to Type-Moons visual novel, Fate/stay night. The first volume was released on December 29, 2006, and is a collaboration between Type-Moon and fellow developer Nitroplus. The second volume was released on March 31, 2007. The third volume was released on July 27, 2007. The fourth and final volume was released on December 29, 2007, along with the Fate/Zero Original Image Soundtrack "Return to Zero". Four sets of Drama CDs were released from 2008 to 2010. An anime adaptation has been produced by ufotable, the first season of which aired from October 1, 2011 to December 24, 2011 and the second season of which aired from April 7, 2012 to June 23, 2012. "to the beginning" is sung by Kalafina who is a Japanese band formed by the composer Yuki Kajiura in 2007, mainly to perform theme songs for the anime Kara no Kyōkai. The band first appeared in January 2008 with two original members from Yuki Kajiuras FictionJunction project, Wakana Ōtaki and Keiko Kubota (not confirmed until the first Dream Port 2008 concert held on April 29, 2008). In May 2008, two vocalists Maya and Hikaru, who had been chosen from an audition of 30,000 participants held by Sony Music Japan and Yuki Kajiura, were confirmed as the final members of Kalafina.
